just in case anyone missed this in the news or maybe not in the loop, Disney is currently refusing to meet with or acknowledge the newly formed animation production workers union that just voted to join IASTE and become an official part of TAG, the animators and animation artists guild
production workers across all studios are currently voting to be recognized for their hard work and invaluable skill at keeping these productions running, but studios are refusing to meet with them to let them negotiate deals or even exist
as someone who works in animation as a designer i know i wouldn’t be able to do my job at all without any of my production workers. they are the incredibly hard working people who oversee pretty much everything in animation. they make sure everything is running on time, that schedules are being followed, they have to know pretty much every single word of the scripts and beats from the storyboards to make sure nothing is missed, and most importantly, they make sure artists are being taken care of and not overworked. they really are the unsung heroes of the animation world
production workers are also by far the most exploited workers in animation currently. they make about a fraction of what artists make for just as much work put in, and currently have no agreement for health coverage or other benefits that artists protected by the union are guaranteed
BUT! there is some good news. right now there’s a petition on IATSE’s website that has over 80,000 signatures currently addressed to disney leadership to do the right thing and meet with this new union and recognized their vote to form. it still needs roughly 21,000 signatures and only takes a minute to sign! anyone with a zip or postal code can sign, meaning both US and Canadian residents can sign and help this union get the deal it deserves!!
i was able to sign from Germany so international zip codes also seem to work!
I have signed this and I want to make a fact known about Disney in particular as they are dealing unfairly with labor -
DISNEY HAS NOT PAID OUT DIVIDENDS TO SHAREHOLDERS SINCE THE START OF COVID.
In case you are not aware of how investing in stocks for the majority of major US firms work, let me briefly (and very basically) explain:
If you buy a share of, say, Disney at market price and hold that share (or multiples of shares) then you normally would not just receive the potential “gain” or “loss” of the up or down on the price of the share when you sell. In the case of Disney (and most banks, and FedEx, and Microsoft, and Apple, and and and) you receive payments from the company on a quarterly, biannual, or annual basis. You can receive this as cash into your stock account or you can ask that the dividend be “reinvested” into the company as a “fractional” share of the stock. This means if you meet the basic requirement defined by the company, you can by 1 or 10 shares, set it on “DRIP” (Dividend ReInvestment Program) and slowly grow the amount of shares you hold in a company over time without ever buying any additional stock. You just set it and let it go. This is one of the major reasons to purchace a “blue chip” type stock - they pay a good divident and you can set it and forget it to build the foundation of a portfolio over time.
I am, in fact, a shareholder and I have been for over a decade. I purchased my Disney stock and set it to reinvest my dividends. I chose Disney because I have visited the parks since I was a kid and I was raised on World Of Color and Uncle Walt until his passing. I love animation in general and I still sob the moment the theme song to Cinderella starts. While Disney’s dividend has varied over the years, when I purchased in 2013 the cash dividend per share was annual and a 1.2% yield. It had a consistent history of dividends back to at least 1995. In flush years (2011 for example) the dividend was quarterly. 2012-2014 were annual. Starting in 2015 it was semiannual.
Then COVID came, theaters were closed, the parks shut down, and Disney went into emergency mode and suspended dividends. They started talking earlier this year about restoring the dividends to stockholders by the end of 2023 and now that labor is organizing and striking I suspect they will continue to hold off on restoration and try to blame it on strikes and labor actions for their own shitty ends.
Look - I don’t have some huge amount of stock in the company and the price per share based on what I paid has been a fine return on investment. However:
IF YOU START HEARING DISNEY BITCH AND MOAN AND WHINE ABOUT THEIR STOCKHOLDERS AND VALUE DURING THE STRIKE AND SAY THEY HAVE TO SHOW PROFIT TO SHAREHOLDERS BLAH BLAH IT IS TOTAL BULLSHIT.
Stockholders are getting no benefit from their Disney holding other than the share value right now. I am not saying that is an insignifigant benefit, but it is not what we stockholders signed up to get. I think most of us “little guys” who hold this stock do so because we believe in the old magic. We are pissed off that the CEO is making enough IN A SINGLE DAY TO PAY AT LEAST ONE WORKING PRODUCTION TEAM MEMBER FOR A FUCKING YEAR. I am more than happy to not get my dividend if that is what it takes to make sure people can pay their mortgage, feed their kids, and have a decent life. However, I don’t think that is necessary when Disney gave ousted CEO Bob Chapek over 24 million in his pay package and another 20 million(ish) in severance then gave returning CEO Iger 1 million in base salary with another 25 million in stock awards (so he can not claim it as pay, pay no taxes on it, and when he finally does sell some of it will only pay 15% in capital gains instead of getting taxed at the maximum of rate 37%).
The facts show that Disney hates unions. Walt was personally fronted when in 1941 cartoonists engaged in a strike after he personally fired Art Babbitt and 16 other SCG union members who had been trying to get Disney to unionize. Walt went so far as to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee and say he thought Communists played a major role in the strike and it got a lot of the people who participated in it blacklisted in Hollywood as a result.
When I signed this petition, there was a “comment” area and I made it clear that I am a stockholder who cries SHAME ON YOU to the entire management of Disney for the way they are treating their creatives and those who work so hard for the company. I have signed similar petitions for other classes of Disney workers over the last 5 years and I’ll continue to do it every time I have the chance.
Am I getting value out of my stock? Yes. But am I going to use my very tiny seat at the table to say that I AM A STOCKHOLDER AND I DO NOT APPROVE OF YOUR BULLSHIT? Oh you bet I will. And if SAG or the Writer’s Guild or animators or production or directors or hospitality workers or any other member of the corporation say they aren’t being treated properly I am gonna use every method I can find to tell corporate they need to not be assholes and pay people a living wage and to have them work reasonable hours for a work/life balance.
So if you got this far the point is that not only is Disney not recognizing valid unions, refusing to negotiate with unions, dealing in bad faith with creatives, and paying shitty rates to their workers but they are also FUCKING OVER THEIR SHAREHOLDERS WHILE THEY DO SO AND ACTING LIKE THAT IS OKAY AS WELL.
So please sign the petition. It is just one small thing but I think it is important.
